House 63
Heritage House Reconstruction
About the Design
Reconstruction of an existing 2-storey semi-detached house. The original house was built in the 60s, and formed part of a larger development of landed houses in the neighbourhood. The owners were attracted to the scale of the house and how it respected the existing terrain; split floors bridged level differences between the higher street entrance, and the lower ground at the rear, and kept the building mass modest.
The reconstruction was approached in a holistic manner. The structure of the existing house was retained, with interior spaces reconfigured to maximize natural light and ventilation. A rear extension added to create a Master bedroom wing with an attached study. Movable screens on the facade provide privacy, and buffer the interiors from noise and the elements. Custom built-in joinery was designed around the owners' needs, with a soft, muted palette to create a timeless interior.
